As CEO of Thompson Engineering, John Baker is responsible for executing the company’s vision and overseeing the development and implementation of the strategic plans and financial goals of the organization. He sets the direction for the company, provides mentorship and leadership development to his team, and engages with Thompson’s employee-owners to execute and achieve the organization’s goals.
John also serves as Chairman of the Board for Thompson Holdings, the parent company of Thompson Engineering and its affiliated companies, Watermark Design Group, and Thompson Consulting Services.
John assumed his current roles in May 2017 after serving the company as President for 13 years. Before his role as President, John was Senior Vice-President of Thompson’s Water Resources Division, where he was responsible for the overall growth and development of the company’s marine design and waterfront development efforts. Noteworthy projects include more than 15 water-based casino developments throughout the country; development of 84 acres of new port facilities in Gulfport, Mississippi; drafting of the first long-term dredged material management plan for “non-federal” disposal sites in Mobile Harbor; and implementation of the 1992 storm water regulations for a wide range of industrial clients.
John earned his DBIA professional certification in 2017 following decades of experience with integrated project delivery. John is responsible for selecting design-build partners and overseeing the delivery of design-build solutions.
John joined Thompson Engineering in July 1991 after beginning his career with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.
John is active in many professional organizations and civic groups. He currently serves as Chairman for the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Alabama. He serves on the Board for the Mobile Branch of Associated General Contractors (AGC) and sits on the Board of Directors for Infirmary Health Systems in Mobile and Thomas Hospital in Fairhope. Previous service includes Board of Directors for the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce; Alabama Governor’s Coastal Recovery Commission; and Board of Directors for the Alabama Council of Engineering Companies.
