Gulf Place Master Plan

Thompson Engineering worked with the City of Gulf Shores to develop a master plan for Gulf Place, a public beachfront area that is one of the city’s most prominent and a center for economic activity. After pre-design meetings to refine project goals, objectives, and our client’s wish list items, three options were presented to the city for consideration. With input from city leaders, schematic design plans were prepared for the City of Gulf Shores Public Beach Design Initiative.

The master plan included design details for lighting, site furniture, shade structures, hardscaping, landscaping, children’s play areas, water features, public art, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, upgraded parking facilities, improved bathroom facilities, kiosks, boardwalks, an amphitheater, piers, public safety measures, fire pits, wildlife viewing opportunities, educational information areas, and picnic facilities. Plans incorporated low impact development practices and sustainable materials in an effort to preserve and protect the environment.

Final drafts of the master plan included recommendations for site material samples, architectural standards, character sketches, and preliminary cost estimates of the proposed improvements. This information was compiled so that it could be used in funding applications and the development of future construction documents.
