ThyssenKrupp AIDT Facility

Thompson Engineering was one of the first consultants called on for the creation of the largest private investment in US history: the ThyssenKrupp Steel Mill in Calvert, Alabama. With sister company Watermark Design, Thompson Engineering has been involved in many projects at the site, including engineering and architecture services for the Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) facility.

The 50,000 square foot office and training building houses ten classrooms and eight multi-media teaching labs; a 9,000 square foot training workshop with an overhead crane; faculty and administration offices; a 3,000 square foot glass lobby; a 5,000 square foot auditorium that seats 225 people and offers full audio/visual capabilities; and a loading dock. Design of the building features LEED criteria, such as a plant-wide, reclaimed water system for irrigation and fire suppression; day-lighting; lighting and thermal inhabitant controls; and heat-island effect minimization using reflective or light colored materials.

Watermark Design and Thompson Engineering were also instrumental in several other ThyssenKrupp projects, including its Administrative Complex, River Terminal, and Interchange and Access Road.
