austal vessel completion yard dock and facilities

Thompson Engineering has served as engineer of record on numerous design, construction, and alterations projects for the Austal USA shipbuilding facility in Mobile, Alabama. The vessel completion yard dock and facilities project provides Austal with a dock area to facilitate outfitting Navy vessels once they are launched.

 

The Design-Build project was constructed in two phases. The first phase was constructed on the south and east sides of the existing inlet. This project included the construction of a guard building; 1305 LF of new relieving platform; new bulkhead; and new 50 ft. wide loading dock. The second project was located along the north side of the existing inlet. This project included the construction of a 2010 sq. ft. restroom facility; 800 LF of new bulkhead; new bulkhead; and a new 50 ft. wide loading dock. The scope of the projects also included site lighting, ship utility stations with data and power connections; fire and water hydrants; potable water with special flood-proof backflow prevention; air; custom hydrant design to supply emergency fire pumps; sewer quick connections; associated lift stations within the port’s flood plain; and associated utility infrastructure including fire pumps.

 

Thompson provided the detailed design for all of the planned additions, including architectural, engineering, geotechnical investigations, environmental and regulatory permitting, stormwater management plans, and construction management of the facility.
