Thompson Engineering has served as engineer of record on numerous design, construction, and alterations projects for the Austal USA shipbuilding facility in Mobile, Alabama. The vessel completion yard dock and facilities project provides Austal with a dock area to facilitate outfitting Navy vessels once they are launched.
The project required the construction of an approximately 20,500-square-foot, 2-story production building with associated offices and a guard building. The production building is pile-supported. 1,305 linear feet of new relieving platform, new bulkhead, and a new 50-foot wide loading dock were constructed along the west and south side of the existing inlet. Asphalt and concrete pavement were used for parking areas and around the production facility. The building is designed for a 600 psf. floor loading and is equipped with overhead cranes.
The scope also included three ship-utility stations with data and power connections; fire and water hydrants; potable water with special flood-proof backflow prevention; air; custom hydrant design to supply emergency fire pumps; sewer quick connections; associated lift stations within the Port of Mobile’s flood plain; and associated utility infrastructure including fire pumps.
Thompson provided the detailed design for all of the planned additions, including architectural, engineering, geotechnical investigations, environmental and regulatory permitting, stormwater management plans, and construction management of the facility.
