BARBER MARINA

Barber Marina is a world class marina located on the Intra-Coastal Waterway in Orange Beach, Alabama. Thompson Engineering was selected to perform the design of the bulkhead, dredging, design of boat slips to accommodate 88 vessels up to 125 ft. in length, as well as the design of three travel lift  piers (100, 70, and 30 ton) for boat launching operations that can withstand a load of up to 220,000 lbs.

The bulkhead was designed as a cantilever wall as no tie-backs were used in its construction. This allowed the Owner flexibility in construction and reduced maintenance requirements. The sheeting was installed “in the dry” and the material was excavated and dredged after the sheet pile installation was complete. The project was designed to accommodate travel lifts operating on three piers. The additional load on the cantilever wall at these locations were resisted by the addition of batter piles in the piers and via a pile-supported slab behind the wall within the active soil pressure area of the bulkhead. Heavy equipment loads during construction were limited to areas outside of the active zone.

Mechanical and electrical outlets for utility supply to the vessels within the marina basin were designed for functionality and around construction limitations. Thompson Engineering also designed the site lighting for the marina, provided civil/site engineering for the design of drainage and retention of storm water, and provided design of the oil-water separator for drainage of the parking lot areas.
