I-565 Greenbrier Road Interchange

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) hired Thompson Engineering to design modifications to the I-565/ Greenbrier Road interchange in Limestone County, Alabama. The project calls for adding an exit loop ramp to northbound (NB) Greenbrier Road at the I-565 eastbound (EB) exit ramp. Plans also call for relocating the I-565 EB entrance ramp to accommodate the proposed loop ramp. Specific tasks Thompson included in the design were concept, preliminary plans, right-of-way plans, traffic control plans, erosion and sediment control plans, final construction plans and cost estimate preparations.

The following safety and operational improvements were included in the design:

  • Add an eastbound exit loop ramp (Ramp B) to the interchange
  • Relocate the existing eastbound entrance ramp (Ramp C)
  • Widen the westbound exit ramp (Ramp D) to two lanes
  • Overlay the north frontage road

The proposed improvements to the interchange allow the client to retain the existing bridge over I-565. This was accomplished by the design and construction of a soil nail wall at the south abutment of the Greenbrier Road bridge. Thompson provided the geotechnical and structural design for this wall. An additional retaining wall was designed to accomplish the required grade change for the new Ramp B exit.
