SR 56 Widening Phase II & III

Thompson Engineering was hired by the Georgia Department of Transportation to design the widening of State Route (SR) 56 in Burke, Georgia. Thompson completed transportation design for Phase II, which is scheduled for construction in November 2019, and Phase III to follow in November 2020.

Phase II: The design for this 2.6-mile section of road allows for improvements of SR 56 from US25 Bypass North to Cates Mead Rd. Approximately 1,650 feet of the roadway would be widened to a 5-lane section with 11-foot lanes and a center turn lane. The road becomes 3-lane with a center turn lane for a section before the bridge over Brier Creek where the center lane drops to tie in with the existing bridge. SR 56 would then widen back to a 3-lane typical section from the bridge to Cates Mead Rd. Proposed right-of-way is approximately 120 feet along the project corridor.

Phase III: The design for this 0.7-mile section includes widening SR 56 from Cates Mead Rd to SR 80. The typical section throughout the project corridor would widen to a 3-lane road and would include rural shoulders. Proposed right-of-way is approximately 120 feet along the project corridor.
