Thompson Engineering was hired by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to provide engineering design, permitting, and construction oversight services for the Marsh Island Restoration Project. The project, funded by the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Early Restoration Plan, was implemented to compensate for environmental damages associated with the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
The project involved the restoration of approximately 50 acres of salt marsh on the north side of Marsh Island, which is owned by the state of Alabama and located in the Portersville Bay region of the Mississippi Sound, in southern Mobile County. The restoration effort included:
- placement of a permeable segmented breakwater designed to provide additional protection for the existing 20+ acre island which had been experiencing shoreline loss at the rate of 5-10 feet per year
- placement of dredged material for land reclamation in order to create marsh, and
- planting of native marsh vegetation.
