Municipal Bridge Inspections

Thompson Engineering provides bridge inspection services for several municipalities including the City of Mobile and the City of Prichard. Thompson performs this work in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) guidelines and procedures. FHWA and ALDOT policies state that all structures over 20 feet in length be inspected every two years at a minimum, or more often if conditions warrant.

Thompson typically performs the inspections with a three-man team consisting of a Certified Bridge Inspector (CBI) and two engineering technicians. Inspections include substructure, superstructure, deck and channel condition ratings, as well as underwater surveys where deemed necessary by site conditions. Our personnel supervise the underwater inspections and set-up and maintain traffic control, as required, during inspection operations.

Thompson produces reports including completed AASHTO Ware Bridge Management System (BrM) forms, scour assessment and stream profile measurements, maintenance/repair estimates, detailed field notes, and photography noting deficiencies, as well as approach and profile photos for the inventory. All reports are reviewed by a CBI prior to submittal.
