Poarch Creek Indian Wastewater Treatment Plant

Before the Wind Creek Hotel and Casino came to Atmore, Alabama, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians managed a wastewater system for roughly 500 residents. The Poarch Creek Indians anticipated that its casino, with 1,600 gaming machines and 236 hotel rooms, would bring an immediate influx of visitors. That called for the quick construction of a new wastewater treatment facility. Thompson Engineering provided the permitting, design, bidding, awarding, and construction of a new 0.5 million gallons per day (MGD) sequencing batch reactor facility in just 18 months. Highlights of the project include:

  • Influent wastewater screens and screenings disposal
  • Two sequencing reactors that are readily expandable to 1.0 MGD
  • Flow equalization basin to allow optimum sizing of downstream equipment
  • Cloth media effluent filter to capture process solids left after clarification and equalization
  • Chlorination facilities to include flow measurement, chlorine contact chamber, dechlorination and aeration
  • Aerobic sludge digestion followed by centrifuge for sludge dewatering
  • Design of yard piping, operations building, pavement, and appurtenances
  • Emergency diesel generator with fuel storage for five-day run time
  • Civil site design for clearing, grubbing and other site work

The plant was constructed in time for the casino opening. At the time of completion, it was running at approximately 40% capacity and was producing much cleaner effluent than its permitted limits.
